Jenny Ran Away in the Mud in the Night

Today’s tune is

What a strange title, eh? From my research, it appears that it might have once been a tune with lyrics, and “Jenny ran away in the middle of the night” were the original words. It may have been misheard as mud instead of middle, and there you go! The folk process in full swing. 🙂

I found the notation for this tune in the key of A, but also read that it is played in the key of F, as well as G. So, I took my pick, and chose G. It is also a modal tune in the B part, so the F# is played as a natural. I put a couple of extra chords in there to give it a nifty feel, so those two F chords in the B part were not part of the original chord progression that I found. I hope that you like it. Oh, it is also one of those tunes where the A and B parts are sometimes switched around. So if you have the opportunity to play with someone else, listen first to see which part they begin with.

Here is a video of a super duper old-time fiddler from Kansas.:) Tricia Spencer, from Lawence, Ks, plays Jenny Ran Away in the Mud….in the key of A. If you wish to learn it in that key, and would like the TAB, just email me at and I’ll send it to you.

This tune is not as well known as some, but I enjoy learning and preserving these “rare” tunes. Grab your guitar and try it out!
